It’s that beautiful time of the year again; Halloween. And with that comes parties, trick or treaters, pub crawls, events, you name it. The beard is a perfect accessory that can make a costume even more identifiable. Why not stand out amongst the rest this Halloween and put your scruff to good use. Today I explore The Top 5 Halloween Costumes for the bearded man.
1. Thor from The Avengers
The God of Thunder. The alpha male of the avengers, Thor. His beard may be one of the most iconic features of his character. Chris Hemsworth’s adaption of Thor brought the classic full beard style to the forefront. Get a red cape, some armour and an enlarged hammer and you’re good to go. What’s even better is the variety of “Thors” you have to choose from. Fat Thor in “Avengers Endgame” is an option, short haired Thor from “Thor Ragnarok” or the classic, original long-haired Thor from the early movies.
2. Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean
The pirate is such an easy and classic Halloween costume to choose. You really don’t need too many accessories to make this idea pop. Jack Sparrow is an awesome choice for those willing to grow out a strong goatee. Full commitment would mean braiding your chin hair as well, but I don’t think its 100% necessary to pull it off. Get a bandana, a white puffy shirt and a pirate hat and this costume is complete.
3. A Werewolf
Have you ever been called a werewolf throughout the year due to your heavy beard or the fact that you refused to shave? Now is the time to cash in on those times and become one. The werewolf costume is one I’ve always wanted to pull off. Who needs a mask when you got a plethora of hair already on your face? Wear an oversized ripped flannel, some jeans and some ears and you got yourself a costume.
4. Gomez from The Addams Family
The English Mustache. This puppy is razor thin with a hard part in the middle. Classic, somewhat sophisticated and creepy all at the same time. Slick your hair back, wear a striped suite with a bow tie and this costume is complete. This mustache style requires precision, a delicate touch and an even shave throughout. Safe to say you need a skilled barber with a straight razor to pull off this style.
5. Sam Quint from Jaws
The mutton chops. This character played by Robert Shaw was a grizzled, seasoned shark hunter that had the facial hair to back it up. Hired to capture a man-eating shark, which was terrorizing a New Hampshire resort town, Quint becomes obsessed with killing the great white. This costume is really just a classic take on the fisherman. Wear a beaten down hat, a wool sweater, some bushy, thick mutton chops and this look is complete.
Although Quin was eventually met with his demise by the end of this film*, those mutton chops will live on forever.
*I'd say "Spoiler Alert", but this movie was released in 1975. If you haven't seen it, get your life together.
